Het voelt als Sinterklaas. In het geheim cadeaux voor iemand kopen en allerlei leuke manieren verzinnen om diegene te verrassen. Op onderzoek uitgaan op blogs om zoveel mogelijk 'persoonlijke' informatie te verzamelen: lievelingskleur, andere hobby's, voorkeuren voor breipatronen en ideetjes voor cadeaux die niets met breien te maken hebben. Op Internet de perfecte wol zoeken voor de sokken.

De eerste cadeaux zijn al gekocht en liggen in de la om in een mooi pakketje te worden verpakt. Ondertussen stuur ik mailtjes en kaarten met cryptische boodschappen ;-)

Ik vermaak me ontzettend met Secret Pal 11 en Monkey Sock Swap 3 en dit is alleen nog maar het voorbereiden van de pakketjes die ik ga sturen... Geweldig!


It feels like Christmas. Buying presents for someone in secret and thinking of ways to surprise that person. Do research on their blogs to get as much 'personal' information as possible: favorite color, other pastimes, preferences for knitting patterns and ideas for gifts that are not knitting related. Looking on the Internet for the perfect wool for the socks.

The first gifts have already been bought and they're waiting in the drawer to be put into a nice parcel. In the mean time I sent emails and postcards with cryptic messages ;-)

I'm having so much time with Secret Pal 11 en Monkey Sock Swap 3 and this is only the preparation of the parcels I will send... Great!

Extra vragen SP 11 / Extra questions SP 11

Voor de Secret Pal 11 uitwisseling is Jenn degene die voor ons alles verzorgd. Zij stuurde de mail met onze match en alle informatie. Als extraatje heeft ze een 2e vragenlijst gestuurd waar een wedstrijd aan verbonden is. Je kunt zelfgeverfde sokkenwol winnen en natuurlijk doe ik mee :-)

Hier zijn de extra vragen die zij ons stuurde:
1. Wat is dat ene brei-accessoire waar je niet zonder kunt? Het is of mijn centimeter of het opschrijfblokje met m'n potlood. Ik weet niet zeker welke van de twee ik het meest gebruik, maar ik gok het opschrijfblokje. Ik maak namelijk aantekeningen tijdens het breien. Ik turf alle gebreide toeren. Voor sokken om de tweede precies hetzelfde te krijgen :-) en voor de rest om later niet te hoeven tellen of ik al met de armsgaten moet beginnen of iets dergelijks. Ik weet niet of dat normaal is, maar ik heb mezelf aangeleerd te breien vanuit een boek en dit is voor mij handig.

2. Als je op vakantie gaat, neem je je breiwerk dan mee? Indien ja, hoeveel en welk soort project? Ja, natuurlijk neem ik iets te breien mee. Laatst naar Vancouver heb ik 100 gram sokkenwol meegenomen (genoeg voor een paar sokken) en sokken gemaakt. Zie hier . Sokken zijn ontzettend leuk om te breien en een lekker licht project om makkelijk mee te nemen. Natuurlijk heb ik daar ook wol gekocht ;-) Ook als ik naar mijn ouders in Nederland ga, neem ik altijd iets te breien mee. Ik kan niet meer zonder.

3. Welke plaats waar je ooit op vakantie geweest bent, is je favoriete plekje? Vancouver. We zijn eind mei voor 10 dagen naar Vancouver, BC geweest. Het was half vakantie, half scouting voor onze toekomstige emigratie. Terwijl we er waren, wisten we het zeker: dit wordt ons nieuwe thuisland, hier ligt onze toekomst.

4. Wat is je favoriete breiboek op het moment? Is het van jou? Op het moment is het Sensational Knitted Socks van Charlene Schurch. De mogelijkheden zijn eindeloos en gaan van heel simpel tot moeilijk. Het boek is van mij. Mijn oma heeft het mij voor Kerst gegeven (nou ja, indirect, ik heb het gekocht van het geld dat zij me gegeven heeft voor Kerst ;-) ).

5. Luister je naar podcasts? Wat is/ zijn je favoriet(en)? Ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik niet weet hoe dat werkt en dat ik dus nog nooit naar een podcast heb geluisterd. Als iemand me zou kunnen uitleggen hoe het werkt: graag. :-)

Morgen volgt een lijst van de breiboeken die ik heb. (Ik heb net mijn pakketje ontvangen van de Interweave Hurt Book Sale ) :-)


Jenn is the person that takes care of things for us for the Secret Pal 11 exchange. She sent us the mail with our match and all the information. As a treat she sent us a second questionnaire which is linked to a contest. You can win handdyed sockwool and of course I'm up for it :-)

Here are the extra questions she has sent us:

1. What is the one knitting accessory you could not live without? That would be either my measuring tape or my little notebook and pencil. I'm not sure which of the two I use more often, but I guess it's the notebook. I make notes while knitting. I write down all the knitted rows. For socks to get the second one like the first one :-) and for other things to not have to count my knitting for the placement of the shaping, etc. I'm not sure this is normal, but I've taught myself how to knit from a book and it works for me.

2. If you're heading on vacation, do you take knitting with you? If so, how much and what type of project? Yes of course I bring a project. Last time to Vancouver I took 100 grams sock wool (enough for a pair of socks) and I made socks. See here. I love knitting socks and it's a nice lightweight portable project. Of course, I also bought wool in Vancouver ;-) Also when I go visit my parents in Holland, I take something with me to knit. I can't live without anymore.

3. Where have you traveled to that you'd consider your favorite spot? Vancouver. End of May we went to Vancouver, BC for 10 days. It was half holiday, half scouting for our future emigration. While we were there, we were certain: this is our future homeland, here is our future.

4. What is your favorite knitting book at the moment? Do you own it? At the moment, it's Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Schurch. The possibilities are endless and vary from very simple to supercomplicated. I do own the book. My grandmother gave it to me for Christmas (well, indirectly, I bought it from the money she gave me for Christmas ;-) ).

5. Do you listen to podcasts? Which is your favorite(s)? I have to honestly admit, I don't know how that works, so I've never listened to a podcast. If someone could be so kind as to explain it to me: I would love to :-)

PACS II

Vandaag zijn we (eindelijk!) officieel echt helemaal gepacst bij de rechtbank van het 15e. Net op tijd voordat mijn andere papieren ook weer verlopen waren en erger... het contract dat we met de notaris opgesteld hadden (voor, ahum, 400 euro).

Vorige keer (eind juli) was het misgelopen, omdat de mevrouw een apostille op mijn geboorteakte wilde zien die sinds 8 september 1976 niet meer bestaat. (Even voor de goede orde, ik ben van bouwjaar 1981). Ze vroeg trouwens ook om mijn verblijfsvergunning. Iets wat Europese burgers die in Frankrijk wonen sinds 2003 niet meer nodig hebben. Ze stuurde ons naar huis en we konden praten als Brugman, maar ze wilde er niets van weten.

Ik moest dus al mijn papieren uit Nederland en van de ambassade opnieuw aanvragen (en betalen!), omdat er op de nieuwe datum (vandaag) al 3 maanden voorbij waren. Dus ik hoef me nu niet schuldig meer te voelen dat ik de helft niet heb betaald van de kosten van de notaris, want ik heb inmiddels meer dan de helft betaald aan papieren waaruit blijkt dat ik niet getrouwd of al gepacst (in Nederland en in Frankrijk) ben, dat ik echt besta en ben wie ik claim te zijn en dat ik bovendien mijn eigen beslissingen kan nemen. (Waarom had N trouwens zo'n papier niet nodig?!)

Gelukkig is alles uiteindelijk goed afgelopen en hebben we alle stempels en papieren, etc. , maar een ding is zeker: trouwen doen we in Canada ;-)



Today we (finally) got officially pacsed* at the court of the 15th arrondissement of Paris. Just in time for my other papers not to have passed the period of three months and even worse... the contract we signed with the notary (for, ehm, 400 euros).

Last time (end of July) we didn't succeed, because the woman wanted a so called apostille on my birthcertificate that no longer exists since 8 September 1976 (Just to clear things up, I'm from 1981). She also asked my for my 'green card', which European citizens living in France don't need since 2003. She sent us home and whichever way we try to persuade her, she wouldn't listen.

So I had to renew (and pay!) all my documents from Holland and the embassy, because three months had passed on the new date (today). I really don't have to feel guilty anymore for not paying half the costs for the notary, because I have paid more than half now for documents that prove I'm not pacsed or married (in Holland or in France), that I truly am how I claim to be and that on top of that I'm capable of taking my own decisions (By the way, why didn't N need to give one of those papers?!)

Fortunately, everything turned out right this time and we received all the stamps and papers, etc., but one thing is sure: we'll get married in Canada ;-)

Lieve SP11-match en MSS3-match/ Dear SP11-match and MSS3-match

Ten eerste: welkom op mijn blog. Ik hoop dat je hier een beetje een idee kan krijgen van wat ik zoal brei en wat ik leuk vind.

Ten tweede: mijn oprechte excuses voor het gebrek aan tweetalige posts tot ongeveer een week geleden. Ik schreef alleen in het Nederlands, omdat ik niet dacht dat iemand anders dan mijn familie in Nederland mijn blog zou lezen. ;-) Ik heb een SP11-match getroffen die in een taal schrijft die ik niet beheers (niet zo gek, ik begrijp/ spreek maar 4 talen, dus er zijn er genoeg over ;-) ) en ik merk nu hoe moeilijk het is om haar blog te lezen en verdere informatie te vergaren behalve de vragenlijst. Ik zal mijn best doen om langzamerhand de reeds gepubliceerde posts te voorzien van een Engelse vertaling, maar dat kan even duren. Natuurlijk schrijf ik vanaf nu mijn blog tweetalig. Beloofd :-)

Second: my sincere apologies for the lack of bilingual posts up to about a week ago. I only wrote in Dutch, because I thought nobody but my family in the Netherlands would read my blog. ;-) I was matched myself to an SP11-match who writes in a language I don't understand (which is not that strange considering I only understand/speak 4 languages, so there are more than enough left ;-) and I see now how hard it is for me to read her blog and gather information other than the questionnaire. I will try my best to slowly start adding English translations to the posts already published, but it can take a while. Of course my future posts will all be bilingual. Promise :-)

Verjaardagssokken 2/ Birthday Socks 2

Mijn schoonzusje en mijn schoonmoeder zijn allebei in augustus jarig. De een precies een week na de ander. Ik had al sokken voor mijn schoonmoeder gemaakt en terwijl ik daar nog mee bezig was, zei N dat het ook wel leuk was om voor zijn zusje sokken te maken.

Voor mijn schoonmoeder was ik ruim op tijd begonnen en met nog ruim twee weken tot haar verjaardag had ik de sokken af... Toen N zijn idee opperde had ik nog minder dan een week om de sokken voor mijn schoonzusje te maken. (Stress!) Ik was begonnen aan een sok in de Baby cable rib uit Sensational Knitted Socks door Charlene Church in Opal Crazy. Toen ik de eerste sok bijna af had, zei N dat hij die andere wol (die ik voor zijn moeders sokken had gebruikt) leuker vond voor zijn zusje en het patroon eigenlijk ook. Ik besloot het 'slachtoffer' dan zelf maar te laten kiezen welke wol en patroon ze wilde voor haar sokken. Uit alle sokkenpatronen koos ze de Bed Socks en ze was erg weg van de Opal Lollipop met paars en blauw. Voilà, de eerste sok is af (inmiddels een week na haar verjaardag lol).

My sister in law and my mother in law both celebrate their birthdays in August. One exactly a week after the other. I had already made my mother in law a pair of socks for her birthday and while I was still working on them, N told me he thought it was a good idea to make his sister a pair of socks as well.

For my mother in law I had started way ahead of her birthday and with over two weeks to go until her birthday I had a nice pair of socks finished... When N told me his idea I had less than a week left to make the socks for my sister in law. (Stress!) I had started a sock in Baby cable rib from Sensational Knitted Socks by Charlene Church in Opal Crazy. When I had almost finished the first sock, N said he actually preferred the other wool (the one I had used for my mother in laws socks) and come to speak of it also the other pattern. I decided to let the 'victim' pick herself. From all the patterns I have, she picked the Bed Sock and she completely adored the Opal Lollipop in purple and blue. Voilà the first sock finished (a week after her birthday lol).

Do you consider yourself a beginning sock knitter, an intermediate, or have you been doing this so long you could probably knit a pair in your sleep? I only learned to knit socks about 9 months ago, but I'm addicted. I can knit socks all day, but not yet in my sleep ;-) I consider myself an intermediate. For pics, check out the flickr-page in the sidebar.

Yarn Preferences:
What colors do you love? I love purple in all its shades, blues and yellows. There is not really a color I don't like.

Do you prefer solids or variegated? Uhm, I have yet to knit my fist sock in a solid color. The wool is in my stash, but so far I've only knitted in variegated or self-striping yarn. I don't really have a preference.

Do you prefer wool, cotton or acrylic yarn? Definitely wool or cotton. For socks I'm not a big fan of acrylic.

What colors would you never wear? None.

What are your favorite brands of yarn? For socks I've tried so far: Opal, Regia and Louet Gems.

Are there any new brands you would like to try? Maybe Lorna's Laces or some unknown yarn. I'm always curious to try out something new.

Which pattern(s) would you like to knit and don’t already own? I currently don't own any Cookie A. Patterns. I really like the German Stockings and Thelonious.

Secret Pal questionnaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I just started knitting little over a year ago and on a student budget ;-) I really loved the 100% merino wool I bought to make the leaf vest. I really don't like these fake fur or sparkly yarns.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
I have a big Ikea cardboard box in which I keep all my needles.

3. How long have you been knitting & how did you learn? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I've been knitting since May 2006. I taught myself with the book Tricot pour les Nuls (Knitting for Dummies in English ).
I consider myself an intermediate. The thing is, I don't really look at the levels. If I see something I like, I try my best to make it. Even if that means I have to start over a couple of times, because I think that if you stick to the 'beginner' things, you only make squares and stockinette stitch sweaters :-)

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
Yup, here

5. What's your favorite scent?
Uhm, I like lavender and lily of the valley (?)

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Not really, I'm more a fan of salty foods, but from time to time I can really crack for chocolate.

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I (try to) sow and I'm trying to teach myself how to crochet. I've never tried spinning.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
I like all kinds of music from classic to pop and always curious to learn about something new. Yes, my computer/stereo/ mp3-player can play mp3s.

9. What's your favorite color(s)? Any colors you just can't stand?
My favorite color is purple (in all its shades) and I also really like blue. I don't really have colors I can't stand.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I live in a civil union with my fiancé, no kids, no pets.

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
Yes to scarves, hats, mittens. I like those a lot. NO to ponchos (sorry, I really don't like them).

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Uhm, at the moment, I knit a lot of socks. I also really like cardigans.

13. What are you knitting right now?
Lol. I always have multiple wips at the time. Right now: 3 socks, 1 cardigan and 1 sweater and the neverending Clapotis. :-) Please check the sidebar to see progress.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Oh yes, please ! :-)

15. Do you prefer straight or circular needles? Bamboo, aluminum, plastic?
Circular bamboos. I've learned I really like needles 3mm/ 3.5 mm and 4 mm and for socks of course 2.5 mm dpn's.

16. Do you own a yarn winder and/or swift?
Unfortunately no, and lately I've regretted not buying the one I saw in Canada for 25 Canadian Dollars. Here they are at least 50 Euros.

17. How old is your oldest UFO?
No UFO's to date. (but I haven't been knitting for that long)

18. What is your favorite holiday?
Christmas

19. Is there anything that you collect?
Bookmarks in all shapes and sizes.

20. Any books, yarns, needles or patterns out there you are dying to get your hands on? What knitting magazine subscriptions do you have?
Lace Style - Pam Allen is on the top of my list as is More Sensational Knitted Socks - Charlene Church.
I also really like yarns like Cascade, Tilli Thomas or some of KnitPicks needles and yarns, but they don't ship to Europe.
I have a subscription to Interweave Knits.

21. Are there any new techniques you'd like to learn?
Oh lots! I always want to discover and learn. I guess I'd like to learn how to do fair isle. It's fascinating.

22. Are you a sock knitter? What are your foot measurements?
Yes, my grandmother taught me in October 2006 and I've been hooked ever since. I'm a size 39 (EU).

Leren fietsen/ Learning how to ride a bike

Vanaf vandaag wordt mijn blog tweetalig, want ik heb me ingeschreven voor Secret Pal 11. Het is een internationale swap, dus het is wel zo aardig als iemand die geen Nederlands leest mijn blog kan volgen.

Afgelopen maandag kreeg ik een sms van N's jongste zus en ze vroeg om 'een enorme dienst' (sic): ze heeft een rol gekregen in een korte film en daarin moet ze fietsen. Klein detail: ze kan helemaal niet fietsen, dus of ik het haar wilde leren.

Dinsdag was het zover. Gelukkig zijn er sinds kort heel veel fietsen makkelijk te huren op iedere hoek van de straat in Parijs:Vélib'. Daarna moest er een plekje gevonden worden waar ze zonder ongelukken zou kunnen leren fietsen... Uiteindelijk werd het in het park(je) naast haar huis. Er was net een stuk van 10 meter zonder bochten.

Na drie uur (mee)rennen voor mij en proberen op te stappen en te trappen voor haar, hebben we niet echt denderende resultaten geboekt. Ik hield het zadel vast en iedere keer als ik dacht dat er vaart in begon te komen en ik los liet, viel ze om. Ze kan nog niet zelf haar evenwicht vinden en ook niet zelf opstappen zonder om te vallen. Heeft iemand nog zijwieltjes in de schuur?

De film wordt in september opgenomen, dus ik denk dat ik voor die tijd nog wel een paar keer in het parkje te vinden ben.



Starting today my blog will be written in two languages, because I entered Secret Pal 11. It's an international swap and so it would be nice if someone non-Dutch could read this.

Last Monday I received an sms from N's youngest sister and she asked me for 'a huge favour' (sic): she got a part in a short film and she has to ride a bike in the film. Small detail: she doesn't know how to ride a bike and could I teach her.

Tuesday was the day. Luckily for us there are lots of bikes for rent on every corner of the street in Paris since last week:Vélib'. After that we needed to find a nice quiet spot where she could learn without getting into an accident... Finally we found a spot in the park near her house. There was a stretch of about 10 meters without any curves.

After three hours of running for me and of trying to get on and use the pedals for her, we didn't get any smashing results. I kept holding on to the sadle and every time I thought we were going somewhere and I let go, she fell over. She can't find her balance yet, nor can she get on without falling over. Does anybody have training wheels in their shed?

The film will be recorded in September, so I think you can find me a couple more times in the park before then.
